To achieve a deep clean, you will need to give some TLC to every surface in your bathroom including those often neglected areas such as behind the toilet. As we face the challenges of a pandemic, keeping the high-traffic areas in our home clean, like the bathroom where germs like to hang out, is now more important than ever.

- All-purpose bathroom cleaner: Choose a product that can be used on multiple surfaces such as countertops, sinks, and bathtubs
- Shower cleaner: Choose a product that can take care of mold and mildew to clean the grout between shower tiles
Once you have your arsenal of cleaning supplies on hand, follow the steps below to give your bathroom the deep clean it deserves.
Deep clean prep
Is your bathroom counter covered with stuff? Start by completely clearing off the counter and shower/bath shelves.
Spray a clean microfiber cloth with anti-bacterial spray or distilled white vinegar (naturally antibacterial) and wipe down all the items in your bathroom that you handle often, such as your shampoo and conditioner bottles, contacts case, and even your toothbrush handle.
As you clean these items, move them out of the space. You don’t want any countertop or floor items in the way as you clean. Now is the perfect time to throw away any empty bottles that are taking up valuable real estate in your tub/shower. Next, throw your bath mat in the washer on the cold cycle, then hang it to dry. Do a load of any used bath and hand towels while you’re at it.
Take a look at your shower curtain liner. If it looks spotty, take it down and throw it in the washer on delicate, then hang it up to dry. Last but not least, open a window if you have one. You want lots of air circulating when you’re using cleaning products/chemicals. If you don’t have a window, then just turn on the fan. Now that your bathroom is prepped and ready to go, gather up your cleaning supplies and turn on your favorite tunes. It’s time for a bathroom cleaning deep dive!
The bathroom sink
Start off by taking a paper towel or dry rag and wipe down the bathroom counter to get rid of any dust, particles, or stray hairs.
Next, spray the bathroom sink, faucet, and counter with your bathroom cleaner and let it sit for the appropriate dwell time that’s needed to kill germs, according to the directions.
Then, wipe down the counter, rinse the rag, and wipe down the counter once again. Do the same with the sink and faucet. The sink stopper may need to be sprayed again with the cleaner.
Next, is cleaning the mirror above the sink. Spray glass cleaner directly onto the mirror, then wipe it down with a paper towel in one direction so you don’t create streaks. Then, take the same paper towel and go over the faucet and handles, removing any spots or streaks left behind from your bathroom cleaner.
The bathroom tub and shower
Start by spraying your shower walls with a mold and mildew cleaner, so it can work its magic while you are scrubbing the tub. If you only have a shower or one with glass doors, let the shower cleaner sit while you take a quick break.
Save the shower doors for last so they don’t get spotty again after you rinse the shower walls. To clean your bathtub, spray the sides and the bottom of the tub thoroughly with the bathroom cleaner and let it sit according to the directions on the bottle.
Now, take a wet sponge, and with the scrubbing side, scrub clean any stains, rings, or soap scum. Rinse out the sponge, and using the smooth side, wash the tub one final time making sure any residue is gone. Now, go back to your shower walls with your sponge and rinse off the mold and mildew cleaner, spending time on the grout and in the corners.
You may still need a bit of elbow grease to scrub the mildew off. Once that task is done, It’s time to clean the shower doors if you have them. For a streak-free shine, do one pass with your shower cleaner, then follow it up with the glass cleaner using a paper towel or dry rag.
The bathroom toilet
It’s toilet cleaning time! Start by applying the toilet bowl cleaner inside the rim of the toilet. Allow the product to sit for the appropriate dwell time needed to disinfect and clean away any residue, according to the instructions on the bottle.
Close the lid and get to work on the outside of the toilet. First, take a paper towel or dry rag and wipe away any dust and/or hair on the base of the toilet. Do the same for the top of the tank and the area between the lid and the toilet tank.
Next, take another paper towel sprayed with bathroom cleaner and wipe down the outside of the toilet several times. Be sure to also clean the flusher.
Now, with a toilet brush, scrub the inside of the toilet, under the seat, and any place where there is stubborn residue. Flush the toilet and rinse the brush, then place it in its holder.
The bathroom floor
Rather than using a clunky vacuum cleaner in a small space, the best way to clean a bathroom floor is with a small broom. Sweep along the edges of the space and work to collect dust and dirt in the middle.
Don’t forget to reach around the base of the toilet where dust likes to collect. An easy way to pick up your small dust pile is with a slightly dampened paper towel. It’s now time to fill your bucket with 2 gallons of warm water.
Add 1/4 cup vinegar and 1 tablespoon dish soap; mix until suds form. You can also make your own bleach solution by combining one tablespoon of bleach with a quart of water. Submerge a rag into the mixture and wring away excess water.
Wipe down the floor completely and rinse the rag between passes. Towel-drying your floors is the best way to make sure they’re left sparkling. But instead of crouching down on your hands and knees to dry them, lay a large towel on the ground. Put one foot on the towel to move it around the bathroom floor, section by section. Keep the bathroom door open when you’re done and allow the room to air dry.
Once your bathroom is spotless, don’t just dump your cleaning supplies. Throw away your disposables, and toss your sponges and washcloths into the washing machine. Add vinegar to the final rinse, and dry your tools completely to prevent them from getting mildew. Finish the job by rehanging your shower curtain/liner (If you have one) and replacing your toiletries and freshly laundered towels and bathmat. Then give yourself a pat on the back. You’ve just successfully completed a deep clean of your bathroom!
