How to Clean Your Baby’s Room or Nursery

Banish germs and stay on top of nursery grime and odors by following these helpful tips below:

Use Safe, Eco-Friendly Cleaners

When shopping for cleaning products, search specifically for items free from ammonia, chlorine, and fragrance, which can provoke respiratory distress and skin irritation in children. Eco-friendly cleaners are better for your baby and better for the environment. Cleaning products are full of dangerous chemicals called VOCs. These common chemical compounds evaporate under normal atmospheric conditions, compromising indoor air quality. They can even make you and your family sick.  

Vinegar has been proven to kill more germs than bleach and can be safely used in your baby’s room.  Mix 1 part vinegar per 5 parts water to clean baby furniture and surfaces in the nursery. If anyone in your family has a cold or flu wipe these surfaces with hydrogen peroxide to kill any lingering germs. Don’t mix the vinegar and peroxide together as this will neutralize the germ-killing ability of the other. Mix one part vinegar per 4 parts water adding a bit of baking soda to clean and disinfect diaper pails and changing tables. 

Always date your peroxide when you purchase it. Any peroxide more than six months old has deteriorated past its prime. Use old peroxide to remove spit up off baby’s clothes or instead of bleach in your washer. When cleaning the baby’s room with the vinegar solution add a drop of pine or rosemary essential oil. They are excellent cleaners as well as deodorizers, disinfectants, and antiseptics. 

Clean Bedding and Sanitize Crib Weekly

Make sure your baby’s crib bedding gets changed at least once a week, even if it seems clean. Drool and minor diaper leaks can cause unseen bacteria to grow in your baby’s crib. Dust and dirt particles can also settle on bedding, leading to skin irritation and allergies. A weekly wash will go a long way toward keeping your baby safe and healthy. Wash the sheets, blankets, and bumper in water that is at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit. (Lower temperatures will not kill dust mites, which are a leading asthma-causing allergen in children).

How to clean and sanitize the crib:

• Wipe down a vinyl or plastic mattress cover with a cloth dampened with water and dishwashing liquid.
• Dry with a clean cloth.
• Vacuum both sides of the mattress.
• Use a brush attachment.
• Clean railings and slats.
• Swipe with disinfecting wipes or a cloth dampened with warm water and mild dishwashing liquid.
• Wipe down the legs and the frame.

Wipe Down Changing Table After Each Use

Every time you change your baby, give the surface a quick spray of cleaner and wipe it over with a sheet of paper towel. This is especially important for those major poop explosions, or when your baby has vomited. For ease, it helps if you choose a changing mat that is waterproof. Once or twice a week, wipe the entire surface down with some water and vinegar. If your mat has a removable pad cover, you may want to throw this in the wash too.

A good diaper disposal system is a nursery must for containing odors and waste and ensuring your nursery remains germ-free. You’ll also need a separate hamper for heavily soiled laundry. Very dirty items, such as soiled sheets or clothing, should be washed separately in hot water to prevent bacteria from contaminating the rest of your laundry. You should actually be dumping the poop into the toilet whether you use cloth or disposable diapers.

• Remove the diaper pail from the room.
• Clean it elsewhere to prevent germs from flying out into the clean nursery.
• Take out the liner, if you use one, and throw it away.
• If not, empty the pail into a garbage bag.
• Scrub the hinges and the joints.
• Use a toothbrush to remove any residue.
• Spray all-purpose cleaner both inside and outside to disinfect the pail.
• Wipe clean with a cloth

Babies spend much of their time on the floor, which means regular cleaning is important. This is especially true if you have carpets, which can quickly become a haven for dust mites and mold. If your nursery is carpeted, vacuum twice a week using a vacuum that has a HEPA filter. Add 10 drops of your favorite essential oil (per every gallon of water). If your floors need a good scrubbing, mix with a 1:1 (vinegar: water) ratio.

Baking soda is also good for cleaning, removing odors, and for your health. So, whenever you are making mixtures of water and vinegar, always add baking soda. It will boost the cleaning effect of water and also reduce the unpleasant vinegar odor. Baking soda is excellent for removing pet odors as well. Note that you can also use baking soda for cleaning carpets.

Rotate and Sanitize Toys  

Less clutter makes for quicker cleaning. Instead of having all your baby’s toys out on display, rotate them by offering five to 10 of them at a time. This will help you keep your baby’s nursery clean and also keep your baby interested in their toys. Too many options and they can become overwhelmed and disengaged.

Before you rotate to the next set of toys, soak plastic, rubber, and teething toys in a bowl of hot water with natural laundry detergent. Leave for a few minutes while you mix together distilled white vinegar and warm water and then transfer the toys for 15 minutes. Rinse with cool water and store them somewhere dry. For plush toys, check the label to see if they can be machine washed. If they can, place them in a laundry bag and on a gentle cycle.
